The foreign box office has slowed recently due to a lack of new movies. While Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! continued to top the chart last weekend, there have been no contenders to dislodge it. The computer-animated comedy had a decent weekend of $10.7 million, lifting its tally to $90.4 million. Most of its holdovers had steep drops, and a $3.2 million opening in France buoyed its weekend. The movie adds six territories this weekend and will have debuted nearly everywhere by the end of the month.
Filling the void, two local titles ruled their respective markets. Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon headlined most of Asia with a strong $9.1 million start from seven territories. In China, it was tops with $4 million, and it placed second in South Korea with $2.4 million. It was impressive in both Hong Kong ($1.1 million) and Malaysia ($300,726) as well. The historical action drama was based on a novel and had broad appeal across the Asian nations. Although Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis grabbed the headlines by becoming the most widely attended movie in France's history, Disco led France's chart with an excellent $8.3 million debut from 824 screens. The comedy represented the eleventh straight weekend that the genre ruled the territory. Disco grabbed $8.8 million overall from all three territories, while Bievenue placed fourth with $7.6 million from four markets. In the United Kingdom, Bienvenue generated $30,454 from just one screen, but the picture isn't likely to expand beyond a limited release there. Rounding out the foreign top five, The Spiderwick Chronicles made $7.2 million from 48 territories last weekend, pushing its total to $59 million. Like Horton, Spiderwick also saw huge falls in its holdovers, but scored a sturdy $2.2 million debut in Australia. Conor Bresnan |
