Holdovers took a hit over the weekend opposite Twilight and Bolt, including big guns Quantum of Solace and Madagasacr: Escape 2 Africa. Quantum fell a steep 60 percent to $26.7 million, a second weekend that was less than its opening day. The Bourne Ultimatum, which opened to a similar number, was off less than 53 percent at the same point and had a $131.6 million ten-day tally versus Quantum's $108.8 million. Other recent James Bond movies had holidays in their second weekends, rendering them incomparable for percentage drops, but Casino Royale was at $94.1 million at the ten-day mark and Die Another Day had $101.4 million (or over $123 million adjusted for ticket price inflation).

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa lost altitude in its third weekend, corralling $15.7 million. Its 55 percent drop, though, was typical for a family movie on the pre-Thanksgiving weekend, competing with youthful new entries, and was nothing to panic about with Thanksgiving ahead. In 17 days, the computer-animated comedy has collected $137.1 million, which is slightly behind the first Madagascar in terms of attendance at the same point.

Role Models had a decent hold in its third weekend and has been pulling ahead of the comparable, higher profile Forgetting Sarah Marshall from earlier this year. The arrested development comedy was down 34 percent to $7.3 million for $48.1 million in 17 days.

Beyond Role Models, grosses were so low that Changeling ranked sixth with a mere $2.7 million. The period drama was off 37 percent for a listless $31.7 million tally. High School Musical 3: Senior Year collapsed in the face of Twilight, down 64 percent to $2.0 million. The Disney musical has rallied a cheerful $86.9 million in 31 days.

The weekend was also notable for the expansions of two limited release movies that have been receiving positive press. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas grew to 406 theaters, an increase of 368 in its third weekend, and made a modest $1.65 million. The World War II drama's total stands at $2.6 million. Slumdog Millionaire had a splashier weekend playing at a fraction of the theaters. The India-set comedy-drama garnered $947,795 at 32 sites in its second weekend for a $1.6 million tally.

Also in limited release, Rachel Getting Married continued its satisfactory specialty run. The comedy-drama was off 29 percent despite losing nearly a quarter of its theaters, grossing $751,611 for an $8 million total. Another marquee limited release, Synecdoche, New York, hasn't fared well. Expanding to 111 venues, the quirky comedy mustered $319,110 for a $1.6 million tally through its fifth weekend.
